According to Jay Tcath, executive vice president of Chicago’s Jewish United Fund, Highland Park is still a popular destination for Jews around the North Shore because of its large number of Jewish organizations, including camps, synagogues, a kosher butcher, and other kosher restaurants.

Mizrahi Grill – History
Well-meaning friends advised Eli and Tomer Mizrahi, first-time restaurateurs, to think about serving the tried-and-true, like pizza or pasta, while they were brainstorming ideas for their new restaurant. The brothers, who are Israeli natives, did not, however, find any resonance in these.
Eli Mizrahi reasoned, “There are lots of pizza and pasta places.” What Highland Park lacked was a restaurant serving traditional Israeli food, with a focus on shawarma and falafel. The Mizrahi brothers launched Mizrahi’s Grill in the Crossroads Shopping Center just over ten years ago.
Knowing the owner: Despite having a background in hospitality management and cooking, Mizrahi claims that his family did not eat out frequently when he was growing up. “My mom cooked most of the time,” he states. “When we wanted falafel or shawarma, we went out.”
In the year 2000, Mizrahi immigrated to the country. He first met his wife in Israel, where they later moved after she expressed a desire to go back to Deerfield. When Eli recommended starting a restaurant, Tomer—who was then residing in Florida—came up from the south. “It’s nice (owning your own restaurant),” Eli explains.
No one tells you what to do. I’ve worked for corporate. I like to use imagination; I like to think outside the box. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don’t. It’s all part of life.”
